Food Distribution Program (Commodity Foods)
Mission Statement
The Food Distribution program is dedicated to distributing nutritios foods to eligible families living within the four county areas of the Qualla Indian Boundary (lands in Jackson, Swain, Cherokee and Graham counties). Service through the Food Distribution program allows participants to choose food items for themselves and or their families to help meet their nutritioinal needs. Dry goods, canned fruits, vegetables, meats, and a choice of different types of fresh produce and frozen meats are available in the food package. The food packages are based on the size of the family and are to supplement the families’ food needs for the month.
Services Offered
The Food Distribution program serves families who meet income, resources, and residency requirements se forth by guidelines established by USDA for the Food Distribution programs nationwide. The distribution program here in Cherokee, serves families in Jackson, Swain, Cherokee and Graham counties. Each month the first Tuesday distribution is done in Graham county at the Snowbird Community Center. The first two Thursdays of each month distribution is in Cherokee county at the National Guard Armory in Murphy. Distribution in Jackson and Swain counties is daily at the Food Distribution warehouse on Old Mission Road in Cherokee (with the exception of trip days and other posted days). The two months during the year which per capita checks are issued to enrolled members, commodities are not issued to families due to the income guidelines; most all families are over income.
