Birdtown Council Members

Chairman Jim Owle is serving his seventh term as a Birdtown Council Representative, and his second term as Chairman of Tribal Council.  He is a 1980 graduate of Cherokee High School, and attended Lake City Community College from 1980-1982.  From 1985 through 1989, Jim was a machinist for the United States Navy, and traveled all over the world. He has been employed by BIA Forestry, and the United States Postal Service.  He is married to Charlene, and they have four sons:  Jim Bob, Joe Don, Tre, and Dillon.  They also have three grandchildren; Mace, Awee, and Julius.  Jim and Charlene reside in Birdtown.  In his spare time he enjoys golf, fishing, spending time with his sons and grandchildren, and spending time with Charlene.  

Committees:  Business Committee, Chairman of HIP, Parks & Rec, Enrollment, Social Services, Lands Acquisition, Preservation Foundation, ex officio member of Museum of the Cherokee Indian.  He is also an official representative on behalf of the EBCI on the following National Committees:  NCAI , USET, and NIGA.


Gene “Tunney” Crowe Jr. is serving his 2nd term as a Birdtown Council Representative.  He is a 1983 graduate of Cherokee High School.  He is a 2003 graduate of Montreat College with a degree in Business.  Tunney served 8 ½ years in the United States Navy, from 1983 – 1992.  While in the Navy, Tunney attended the Navy Military Police School & Corrections.  After returning home, he began working as a police officer for the Tribe, and was promoted to Chief of Police. He moved on to work for Harrah’s Cherokee Casino, and was promoted to the Director of Security/Surveillance for the Casino.  Tunney has worked a total of 16 years for the Tribe in numerous jobs.  Tunney and his wife Sarah reside in the Birdtown Community with their three daughters; Paige, Regina and Nikki Crowe. He is the proud grandfather to Cher Elaine and Laila. In his spare time, he enjoys deer hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Committees:  Community Services, QHA, Roads, Health Board,  Timber & Natural Resources, Planning.  Council liaison for the TCGE, and TGC.   EBCI official  USET Veterans Representative. .
